Fascinating, challenging, and deeply human submitted by hgerety on July 22, 2020, 4:19pm "to love Haiti is to come away bruised...to love Haiti is to love something that may not even love itself, but... it's still love, after all." (196)

Katz's book is not just a fascinating look at foreign aid in Haiti (both before and after the 2010 earthquake), but also a deeply engrossing and enjoyable read. In addition to a close look at the issues at hand (especially considering the book's brevity), you get a feel for the place - for a place which, in my case, I've never seen with my own eyes. Katz deftly balances the examination of larger issues with the humanization of those same issues in individuals' stories. It should be noted that Katz's focus on realism means that there is some crude language throughout.

This is not the end-all be-all of books about Haiti, but it's not meant to be. This is a great book for anyone interested in Haiti, Haitians, poverty, and the way we - as nations, as the first world, and as individuals - seek to help Haiti and places like it.
