Read by Alison Larkin.
"Since prehistory, humans have braved the business ends of knives, scrapers, and mashers, all in the name of creating something delicious-- or at least edible. In Consider the Fork, award-winning food writer and historian Bee Wilson traces the ancient lineage of our modern culinary tools, revealing the startling history of objects we often take for granted. Charting the evolution of technologies from the knife and fork to the gas range and the sous-vide cooker, Wilson offers unprecedented insights into how we've prepared and consumed food over the centuries-- and how those basic acts have changed our societies, our diets, and our very selves" -- from publisher's web site.

Seriously, Consider the Fork
submitted by apicknell on June 13, 2015, 3:12pm
Have you ever wondered how they way we eat came to be? Probably not. Doesn't seem like something one could fill a book with - but oh, you would be wrong!
Alison Larkin's voice takes you on a pleasant and interesting journey through Bee Wilson's culinary history everyday kitchen items. Consider the fork, or the spoon, or the knife, or all the different kinds of knives, or pots, or ovens... Wilson creates a historical portrait of each item as well as a portrait of the historical time in which they were created, innovated, or embraced, and her prose treats these culinary objects as items to treasure and cherish. If you like listening to the Splendid Table on NPR, I think you will find Wilson's Consider the Fork right up your galley.
