I am a fragilesta, I think
submitted by shermdock on August 16, 2016, 9:55am
After reading the Black Swan, I proposed to Nassim Taleb via his website. OK, maybe I didn't actually do that, but I seriously considered it. Because he's a thoughtful guy. Philosophical. And he explains himself well.
Antifragile is a great book, if the point of reading it is to challenge your own ideas, rail against the author, agree whole-heartedly with the author, and leave with a new framework for analyzing behaviors, policies and the structure of things.
I disagree with his thoughts on prescription drug culture. (If you don't suffer from depression it's difficult to comprehend what it's like to function through it.) I think he's hilarious, dragging books through airports because he won't adapt to Kindle. I don't understand how his "Fat Tony" foil character deepens or illustrates better his case for how we can have more grit. Be more resilient.
Am I a fragilesta by Taleb's definition? Probably, although not a stringent one. I believe in safety nets, when and where they can be provided. The poor...those for whom safety nets are designed, tend to be antifragile anyway. It takes great resilience to keep on trucking.
