Jennifer Worth was just twenty-two when she volunteered to spend her early years of midwifery training in London's East End in the 1950s. Coming from a sheltered background there were tough lessons to be learned. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying.

Life Affirming submitted by kathy_vincenz on July 5, 2013, 7:02pm Wonderful memoirs of the author's time as a midwife. Better than the series because it is more realistic and leaves in the religious conversion.
call the midwife book submitted by a2sue on August 10, 2013, 5:40pm this is a fantastic novel. and i'm so glad they made it into a tv series!
Call the Midwife is a wonderful read. submitted by KMLB64 on August 31, 2017, 12:06pm Poignant, funny, historical, informative, sad, at times suspenseful. I loved this book. I have so much admiration for Jennifer Worth. She was a plucky, resourceful, courageous woman. I wish they didn't edit out the part about her faith in the TV show.
