A serviceable fantasy novel with a light steampunk veneer over a society branded by a faerie war and the resulting stranded and defeated fay folk. I found the first two thirds of the novel plodding. There is so much set up that I realized in the end that I should have expected the abrupt ending because the book seems to be intended as the founding volume of a series instead of a standalone novel. Probably a good fit for 4-8 grade students who are delighted by the fantasy elements. I did enjoy the two protagonists, but they are certainly a weirdly matched pair.
