Watch out for British naturalists! submitted by FordAlpha on July 7, 2018, 10:46pm This is an attractive general field guide to trees, with a moderate amount of detail and technical terminology. In the DK style, it contains lots of photo illustrations. The introduction includes a nice, tidy timeline of plant evolution and discussion of classification, along with several pages devoted to terminology. There are some major drawbacks for users seeking a good field guide: 1) Many species that are common in Michigan are not included, although related species are. 2) The author is British, so there are many confusing Eurocentric common names. Just one example: the name “Sycamore” is used for a species of maple that in America is known as “Sycamore Maple” or “Plane Maple”; Americans use the name “Sycamore” to refer to an unrelated genus, which the Brits call “Plane Tree.”
