Surprisingly Dark submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 8:23am This album has a somewhat dark undercurrent running through it, even in its upbeat anthems, but Carrie Underwood’s strong vocals carry a tone of hope even in its darkest moments. After a couple of radio-friendly tunes, the album pivots to ballads, each of which is good in isolation even if they blend together a bit when listened to in sequence. The most effective songs, which are mostly those that rely more on humor than on sentiment (with the notable exception of the excellent “Blown Away”) are among the best of Underwood’s career, and the rest are still a cut above most contemporary country due to Underwood’s ability to bend her vocal talent to a song’s true meaning. This album is perhaps a bit uneven, especially after only one play-through, but it has a consistent point of view that keeps the tone cohesive and keeps getting richer with subsequent listens.
