Coming Out submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 23, 2013, 2:59pm In part two of her autobiographical graphic novel series, Alison Bechdel focuses on her relationship with her mother, as well as her various romantic relationships. She weaves in information about some famous philosopher and psychologists as it relates to her own therapy.
Read part one of the series, "Fun Home," first to understand what is happening in this book. "Are you my mother?" is far more surreal and philosophical, whereas the first was much more of a memoir with a plot-line. The second book covers Bechdel's life roughly from her college years to 2012.

Interesting, especially... submitted by sdunav on July 3, 2014, 9:05am ...if you've read "Fun Home" and/or are especially intrigued by therapy and psychoanalysis (Freud, but especially Donald Winnicott) or Virginia Woolf. There are a lot of dream sequences, which Bechdel attempts to interpret, as well as an exploration of her changing relationship with her mother and her adult relationships with other women.

Family dynamics submitted by wendylv on July 13, 2014, 11:56am I think I needed to read "Fun Home" first to better appreciate this book, but I did enjoy the discussion of therapy and analysis and Alison Bechdel's analysis of her family and relationships.

Growth submitted by kerenemoore on August 27, 2020, 2:16am If you followed Bechdel from her first book, you'll know that her perspective is art, doubt, over-emphasizing parenting and underemphasizing self. And yet, we see something here. In her mother's refusal to play along, I think we finally see Bechdel grow up. Well worth the read.
