Based on Os Mistérios de Lisboa / by Camilo Castelo Branco.
Adriano Luz, Maria João Bastos, Ricardo Pereira.
Raul Ruiz's masterful adaptation of the eponymous nineteenth-century Portuguese novel. The core story centers on Joao, the bastard child of an ill-fated romance between two members of the aristocracy who are forbidden to marry, and his quest to discover the truth of his parentage. But this is just the start of an engrossing tale that follows a multitude of characters whose fates conjoin, separate and then rejoin again over three decades in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy.
DVD ; NTSC ; widescreen.
Contents: Mistérios de Lisboa.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Completely in love submitted by jibkidder on June 16, 2022, 11:42pm with this work. I have avoided Ruiz's period pieces because, for some dumb reason, I expected them to bore me, but I was enthralled once I gave this a chance. A very clear and long story, with these sort of more mystical or suspended or strange moments, but just all around not so much a strange work as a singular one. Look forward to revisiting down the road and Rest In Peace, Raul.

VERY disappointing, what the hell is this, a "coming of age" god damned soap opera? PAthetic and ugly to listen to. submitted by Tassos on December 31, 2022, 1:32pm Very poor product. I was expecting something far more interesting, from its title. And the Portughese language is really not easy on the ear. Nothing like the musicality of French or Italian, it sounds like some wounded animal protesting while it is being hurt!

Reallty lame, and really UNWATCHABLE. WHat is wrong with these people? And to make it worse, you got the God-Damned VIOLINS in the musical score....

A total and u tter LOSER.
