The real life of Downton Abbey submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 24, 2013, 12:43am This book describes the very stratified British manor house in the early 20th century. Those who like the "Downtown Abbey" series will enjoy this book, as it describes how the characters would have fit into society of the time: aristocratic family or servants. The lives of the servants would not have been nearly as romantic as the TV show would have its viewers think, but even some members of the aristocracy, particularly women, lived circumscribed lives. Women had to wed, and landing a good husband was the sole job and goal of young, single women.
Great companion to the show submitted by doctorfang on July 21, 2014, 6:24pm This book provide tons of background information regarding Downton Abbey, particularly how manor houses such as Downton Abbey work.
As gilded as the age submitted by Sara W on August 21, 2015, 9:03am This big, glossy book full of full color photos and behind-the-scenes information and stories is a perfect antidote for Downton Abbey withdrawal. In between seasons, this book can sate the demand for more Crawleys in a way that just re-watching the show cannot.
