Train to Pluton
submitted by Caser on January 13, 2012, 11:55am
This record represents a massive step forward for M83 in terms of writing better songs that are built upon Gonzalez' intense talent for creating atmospheric landscapes out of quirky niches. M83 continues to take its best-of-every-decade approach, but this time the songs are markedly more theirs. They may still sound like an 80s band by the instrumentation, but their sound is no send-up.
The first disc is the strongest example of the songs-first philosophy, with Midnight City standing above as not only the best on the record, but one of the top-10 songs of the year. It's easy to get caught up in the feel of the songs, for Gonzalez is brilliant at making you feel like you're right in the best scene of your new favorite movie. Even the twee, "Raconte-moi une histoire" where kids tell a dream narrative about magical frogs, is surprisingly hypnotic, and a solid counter-balance to the heavier, more dramatic songs.
The second disc has less singing, but is nevertheless more focused on structure and direction in the songwriting. The more I listen to this album, the more I need to hear it.
