Wheeeee... submitted by rimpopu on July 9, 2013, 6:25am This is a very simple book for very young children. It has a story through pictures. The only words are those of the sounds. A storyteller (parents and guardians) with good imagination could bring to life the contents of the book for the child. A young child leaves his red sled outside his cottage and goes to bed. The bear is the first one to pick it and slide on it enjoying the winter snow. Then a moose, a raccoon, a rabbit and other night creatures join him one by one. The pictures are drawn well but the colors are few: white for snow, brown for most of the animals, and red is the only bright color which is used for sled and the child's hat & sweater. My child enjoyed it because it was one of the books I read to her on fun on winter snow. I would recommend it for very young children who still look more at pictures and get excited by different sound words.

Since my first daughter was born two and a half years ago, I've found myself (surprise!) reading a LOT of picture books. I don't even remember the vast majority of them - but every once in a while, you read a book that really stands out. And sometimes, the kid seems to really like it, too. Red Sled is one of those books - one of those books you not only want to own for your own kids, but look forward to reading to the grandkids one day.
Judge's drawings are bright, eye-catching, and dynamic, and her use of onomatopoeia - whether it's the bear scrinch-scrunching his way up to the cabin, or the animals "gadung-gadung-gadung"-ing over a quick series of bumps-- is pitch-perfect.
Immediately after finishing the book, my daughter asked me to read it again - a true sign of her approval.
This book is sweet, simple, and fun - and let me be the hundredth person to say, destined to become a classic.
