Just ok submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 24, 2020, 4:33pm I think this might be Tamora Pierce's weakest book. I thought the pacing was really off and it was much longer than it needed to be. I found it a bit of a disappointment after a great first and second book in the series. However, I still think Beka is a great character.

Not the best submitted by sally.m.maier on June 21, 2023, 5:03pm I love Tamora Pierce’s work. I’m pretty sure I’ve read them all. This is by far the least impressive thing she’s written.

I loved the first two books in the series, and the characters are fantastic, but this book seems to do everything just a bit off. Instead of a new and robust setting, the plot takes place rushing through old settings without really settling down. Instead of strong characters, the same old characters remain, but the background characters are again, brief glimpses of familiar friends rushed through with little added. The new characters seemed oddly unmemorable. The less I say about the main cast the better; I was highly disappointed not by the way the story ended up, character-wise, but by the fact that it didn’t feel logical or consistent. The plot itself is so rushed such that it doesn’t fully settle, and yet the book was long enough that were it paced properly it could surely have fit within the pages.

If you’re like me and want to own your favorite books to reread time and again, maybe get this one from the library, read it to complete the set, and then forget about it.
