It is 1803, six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy's magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth's sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy's sister Georgiana. And preparations are under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball. But now, Pemberley is thrown into chaos after Elizabeth Bennett's disgraced sister Lydia arrives and announces that her husband Wickham has been murdered.

Great but not entirely successful effort submitted by wendylv on June 12, 2015, 3:48pm My book club picked this book and as a "Pride and Prejudice" fan I was intrigued by the concept of continuing Jane Austen's story as a murder mystery. P.D. James acknowledges in the forward she has a tough task before her. She makes a great attempt, but doesn't entirely deliver. The mystery was a little too easy to figure out and the great elements of "Pride and Prejudice", the lively dialog and witty characters, were missing from this book. Sadly, Elizabeth is not a big presence in this book because, of course, women had little to do with courts and investigations in 1805. I'm going to check out the mini-series adaptation of the book and see how that compares.
Disappointing submitted by lballard on August 7, 2015, 6:23am I love Jane Austen, and I love PD James. Sadly this book is a credit to neither. The characters aren't believable as the ones in Pride and Prejudice, and the mystery isn't compelling in its own right. Sad.
