Jasper Fforde for young adults submitted by rummella on July 21, 2013, 7:08pm I LOVE Jasper Fforde's adult novels-- quirky and funny and well-thought. He does the same magic in his Last dragonslayer series.... Both books so far are excellent for the young adult audience! Fforde does such an excellent job of creating a magical and fascinating world that just comes alive.

Somewhat like "Buffy" submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 27, 2013, 12:24pm For those who loved "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the series about dragon slayer Jennifer Strange will be a treat.

Jennifer is an orphan raised by crustacean-worshipping nuns in a mythical kingdom. When she came of age she was assigned to work as the manager of a company of magicians, Kazam. The company owner has been missing for years.

Jennifer is 15, but still the most mature and smart person at Kazam. Her life is relatively dull until the newspaper puts out a story about a prophecy that the last dragon will soon die, making its land available to anyone who can get onto it fast enough to stake a claim. The one problem is that Jennifer is prophesied to be the last dragon's slayer, a job she certainly doesn't want.

Read this first book in the series in order to understand the others, all of which I recommend. The "Dragonslayer" series has a similar feel to the "Thursday Next" series as it takes place in a parallel world in which science and magic work differently than our own. Fforde still manages to get a dig in at big corporations in both series, while making magic (or what looks like it to us) into a part of everyone's daily life in these worlds.

Jasper Fforde has a great sense of humour! submitted by delaflynn on August 31, 2018, 4:47pm His chronicles of Kazam are as good as his Thursday Next series, Nursery Crime novels and Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron. If you enjoy humour (both subtle and riotous), satire and wit then the novels of Jasper Fforde are for you! Although the Last Dragonslayer is technically considered Teen Fiction, it's a great read even for adults (I turned to this series as I'd run out of any more of his adult fiction to read).
