Improvement from 13th Child submitted by Sunny29 on August 18, 2014, 4:58pm I was a bit underwhelmed by the lack of action and magical activity in the 13th Child, the book preceding The Great Barrier. In this second installment, I was pleased to get a bit more of the magical social context Wrede was trying to develop in 13th Child (and a marginally more exciting plot!) Eff is our heroine, the magically "jinxed" daughter of a powerful Seventh Son, and the sister often shadowed by her even more powerful and "lucky" Double-Seventh Son brother, Lan. While her brother is away at college, Eff has found her niche working with magical and non-magical creatures, which gives her the opportunity to accompany a travel group out west beyond The Great Barrier. Eff learns more about the three main branches of magic, and how they affect her own style of spell casting, which serves more of a purpose to control and understand one's own natural and emotional tendencies, rather than the power of magic itself.
