England in the 1890's submitted by sdunav on July 18, 2014, 2:18pm This is a gentle but lyrical autobiographical novel that describes growing up in a tiny hamlet in England (about 16 houses, one tavern, and no stores of any kind) in the 1880's through 1890's. It was a slow read, a fairly long book that I picked up and read a chapter out of every few days, but it was still interesting and very relaxing.

There was also a lot that reminded me of an ethnography - the last remains of a peasant way of life were described: clothes and how they were made, raising pigs in the garden, May Day and the Queen of the May and collecting flowers and nuts in the hedgerows, gleaning the corn fields (I have a hard time remember their corn is wheat and not our corn), all this and a lot more is described in beautiful detail.
