Jacob Marlowe has lost the will to live. For two hundred years he has wandered the world, enslaved by his lunatic appetites and tormented by the memory of his first and most monstrous crime. Now, the last of his kind, he contemplates suicide -- until a violent murder and an extraordinary meeting plunge him straight back into the desperate pursuit of life -- and love.

we're all just animals

The first-person narrative is both highly erudite and extremely crass, making for a really interesting tone--one which really suits the character, and makes for a very refreshing change from urban fantasy characters who sound like frat boys (I should think after a century or two, one would gain some perspective and develop enough self-awareness to tamp down on one's inner dudebro).
Really interesting explorations of man's bestial nature and of the reality of living with immortality (or extended mortality). But it's saved from getting too heavily philosophical by the aforementioned crassness, which is not at all gratuitous but seems a natural aspect of a man who is, after all, part animal.
