A brash and precocious ten-year-old comes to Paris for a whirlwind weekend with her rakish uncle. Based on a popular novel by Raymond Queneau that had been considered unadaptable it is a bit of stream of consciousness slapstick, wall to wall with visual gags, editing tricks and effects.

Zany fun submitted by Kurogane Ichigo on June 16, 2014, 7:40am I've read the novel that this film is based on, and it was certainly no easy task to put it on the screen. But I think Louis Malle achieved his goal: it's every bit as linguistically complex and visually fun and funny as the novel is on the page. I'm especially fond of the visual gag of the uncle and his taxi driver friend telling Zazie the name of different landmarks they pass, but in the film, they're just passing the same building again and again while they say it's this, and say the next one is something else. Great fun. Love Zazie, the anarchic little girl.

make no sense submitted by gogo on June 18, 2019, 6:04pm great boook!

Girls just wanna have fun submitted by tarascon on July 27, 2023, 9:45am I’m an admirer of the things OuLiPo were doing—of which Queneau and, among others, Perec were members—so it’s pretty cool that Malle tried to film the book. Check the book out before watching this wacky film. Or not.
