Read by Rupert Degas.
Titus Groan introduces the inhabitants of the dismal Gormenghast castle as a new heir is born to the ruling family. Newborn Titus is the 77th Earl of Groan. His father, Lord Sepulchrave, is master of the castle but finds no joy while serving out the duties of his post. The mistress of Gormenghast, Countess Gertrude, ignores her newborn son and spends her days locked away in her chamber with her pet birds. But the order of things is about to shift, for an ambitious kitchen servant, Steerpike, has weaseled his way into the family's confidence.
