COMMUNITY REVIEWS

England in the 1960s submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 27, 2012, 12:06pm In a fairly realistic portrayal of northeastern England in the 1960s, Detective George Gentley of Scotland Yard has himself assigned to a local police force, but the work is not nearly as easy as he expected. For one, he cannot understand the local "Geordie" accent and has to have a sergeant assigned to him to translate the local slang (viewers may recognize as him the Knight Bus driver in one "Harry Potter" film).
The series shows the sexism, racism and other prejudices of the era, as well as the police corruption and unhappiness it all brought. It also shows almost everyone smoking most of the time. Again, this is realistic if shocking to our modern sensibilities.
The show is very violent, including portrayals of rape and other forms of torture.

Gently in the Blood submitted by willow on August 24, 2015, 7:01am This episode involves counterfeit passports and includes scenes of British Arabs, discussions of racism, and a mixed race baby, as well as discussion of a man wearing women's underpants.

The discussion of racism and discrimination is definitely a subplot. However, the research on Islam for this episode was fairly poor, as the scene with an older man, Thomas Ali (played by Stevwart Scudamore) performing Islamic prayer consisting exclusively of muttering, "Alhamdulillah, inshallah," or, "Thank God, God willing," repeatedly, while bobbing on a prayer mat.

This is not a cozy series. At least one person dies in each episode, and other crimes usually take place as well.
