Sebastian Junger, Tim Hetherington.
This documentary chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. This is an entirely experiential film: the cameras never leave the valley; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats.
DVD, anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1, NTSC, all regions, Dolby Digital.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Take your time with this one. submitted by CasualTim on May 24, 2011, 8:39am I'd heard great things about Restrepo. When I finally watched it, though, I was at first a little underwhelmed. But after a long steep in the teacup of my brain, I think that feeling of being underwhelmed speaks to how important this film is.

I think what underwhelmed me was the interaction of two things. First, the footage is so close to the action it's difficult to mentally accept that what's going on is real and not a scripted drama, with shots planned in extensive detail (along with much of the landscape looking like it could be in any southwestern US region). And second, while the film *looks* like a Hollywood movie, the progress moves like reality: in halting bursts that is usually maddening. The extremely intense action has either no resolution whatsoever, or incredibly anticlimactic resolution. The visuals are telling us that after these horrible things happen, the good guys will win the day and the war will be over. But the reality is that, at best, a few feet are gained, and the next day the price to defend it may be worse than the price to acquire it.

This is the reality of war. I can't say anything in this review that those of us who've never been there don't already think we know, but Restrepo puts it into stark contrast like seldom before. It's difficult to fully comprehend what you're seeing, and it's difficult to deal with once it all does come into focus. Of course, these are reasons that we should give this film our complete attention.

good documentary submitted by Jackie77 on August 17, 2015, 12:58am I enjoyed this very much. Heart goes out to our military who are there for the goodness of fighting for a cause. The members who are there to murder and torture are wasting our resources and putting the good guys at risk. Restrepo was a great man.

Highly Recommend submitted by willg66 on August 26, 2021, 11:09am Great movie, very powerful. A perfect pairing with the Sebastian Junger book, War.
