COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Loved It. Terribly Underrated. submitted by CasualTim on December 2, 2010, 1:19pm As usual, I have not read the graphic novels that this film is based on. But it doesn’t matter one bit: Scott Pilgrim – the movie – is really quite an achievement. It comes brimming with continual laughs, emotional investment, and a simple, but hugely entertaining style that somehow just doesn’t get old. Most important is that last compliment though; there was so much potential for the style to become annoying, incomprehensible, or just stale. Director Edgar Wright somehow walks the fine line nearly perfectly for 112 minutes (which suddenly makes sense as I see that other directing credits include Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead).

I notice that the few negative reviews I’ve seen all seem to relate to what I suspect is a lack of familiarity with the film’s subject matter (the secondary subject… the subject that is the setting, that is the medium), and perhaps with the multi-tasking, information-from-every-angle world we now live in. If you’re a (real, not trendy) Luddite, or picket GameStop on your time off, you can safely ignore this movie. Otherwise, it definitely deserves your attention.

I originally gave this an 8/10, but I think I’m subconsciously discounting it from an unfair bias that films this fun can’t also be important. Let’s give it a 9.

I agree submitted by InterestedPat on June 28, 2011, 8:32pm I completely and utterly agree with CasualTim. Everyone said this movie sucked but I loved it. Everything from the plotline to the intense lights flashing (yes, I like those) were awesome. The fight scenes were over the top and a lot of the humor was hilarious. Scott Pilgrim earned the power of self-respect and this movie earned the power of my respect.

for what it is submitted by lekendrick on June 29, 2011, 1:20am or was meant be a wonderful & excellent film I'd suspect most of the negative professional critical reviews due shooting & production methods involved assembling such a cast! How ever any one who'd pay money punch, Michael Cera, has to rate this one as a must see so five stars...

Bread makes you fat? submitted by emjane on June 23, 2012, 6:43pm What a great movie! What's most impressive is what a great representation of the graphic novels it is. The characters, even really minor ones, look exactly right, and many scenes are live-action version of the book panels.

We are here to make you think about death and stuff submitted by chuntoon on June 24, 2012, 10:57pm This movie is enjoyable and underrated. It's a lot of fun to watch. Having read the books (though they weren't finished when the film was made... which might account for the lack of focus in the second half of the movie), I have to say that the casting was excellent. In some cases, it is literally as though the characters came to life from the page (I'm looking at you, Kim Pine).

Innovative love letter to Toronto submitted by klickitat on August 19, 2012, 8:02am A funny movie filmed with an innovative style that mimics the graphic novel source material without being gimmicky. Like the graphic novels, a love letter to Toronto. Lots of in-jokes for Canadians and fans of Canadian films.

spvtw submitted by a2sue on August 27, 2013, 7:08am scott pilgrim is fun to watch, but nothing really special

Another boring white dude submitted by soccerstar on June 23, 2015, 9:41pm Keep in mind that I haven't read the comics.

This movie is fun, but I wouldn't watch it more than once. It has momentum in its progression through the exes, it has great action sequences, and the video-game-inspired effects are nice and different.

My problem with this movie is that I just don't care about Scott, at all, and Ramona Flowers is a manic pixie dream girl. No disrespect to the actors or the original comics. The relationship that develops between them isn't too convincing, either. The emotional drive was lacking in this movie for me.

Okay submitted by ishhewitt on July 10, 2016, 2:21pm I wanted to like this, but it's just not my style. Young adult film.

Read the comics too! submitted by KOH on August 2, 2017, 10:43am I love this movie. I beg you to read the comics though, because they are just phenomenal.

Underrated Gem submitted by timdufresne on July 9, 2018, 5:19pm Edgar Wright is an incredible filmmaker who uses licensed music, probably better than anyone. You can see the seeds of what made Baby Driver so great in this film (though I think this film is better overall). Great movie, lots of fun!

I HEART THIS MOVIE SO MUCH submitted by wendylv on August 29, 2018, 2:00pm Maybe it helps to have a Gen X familiarity with video games to appreciate all the bonus points this movie is racking up, but there is plenty here to enjoy even if you miss the references. Beck and Broken Social Scene wrote songs for each of the bands which sound exactly like songs those bands would write. The supporting cast is a who's who of actors with chops (Anna Kendrick, Kieran Culkin, Brie Larson, Mae Whitman, Aubrey Plaza). All in all this movie is a blast.

Incredible submitted by lstorc on August 31, 2018, 1:46am This movie was insanely fun. It's light-hearted, and shows respectful nods to video games and action adventure films whule remaining light-hearted.

A must watch submitted by Peter Pasque on August 12, 2019, 7:15pm This movie is a great compliment to the graphic novel series. It stands well on its own and is a great music movie.

Hilarious! submitted by wilcomea on July 19, 2022, 3:06pm Super funny and interesting film style.
