Jack is thrilled when he receives an invitation to the princess{u2019} birthday party, but he{u2019}s too poor to buy a present. He resourcefully gathers ingredients and bakes a wonderful cake. On his way to the castle, the cake is slowly demolished by crows, a troll, a spooky forest, a dancing bear, and even a palace guard, until the only present Jack has to offer the princess is the story of the cake's demise. Of course, this gift pleases her much more than the boring rubies and tiaras brought by richer guests, and she declares that her new friend will have the honor of cutting the royal cake.

Brainstorming Adventure submitted by jackson.sarah.jean on February 16, 2016, 7:50pm My children and I enjoyed following Jack on his brainstorming adventure. Jack first was invited to the princess’ birthday, but then was told he couldn’t go because he didn’t have a present (bummer). No mind though, Jack is cleverly optimistic. It was fun watching him work to get a present for the princess, and then work to defend the present, but still make his way to the party. Clever Jack had us entertained the whole way.
Great! submitted by kkellis on July 17, 2018, 7:46pm A very enjoyable book! We loved the ending
Resourceful, Resilient Jack Takes the Cake submitted by FordAlpha on August 30, 2019, 10:21pm Jack is determined to bring a worthy gift to the princess' birthday party, but it will require all of his resources, resourcefulness, and resilience to make the gift and get it to the party. Jack's unswerving optimism and adaptability in the face of setbacks make a great but not overstated message for kids. The obstacles he faces on the way to the palace are funny, and some of them are quite unexpected. In the end, this tale also has a message about the power of storytelling. All together, it's a delight to read aloud with kids whose attention spans have developed enough for some twists and turns.
