Redemption In Indigo
submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on July 25, 2013, 3:17am
Drawing on African folklore, Karen Lord writes an engaging, humorous, and haunting novel. The protagonist is understandable, practical, and resourceful. Anyone interested in folklore in general, or how it is found in modern fiction, or anyone just looking for a change of pace from epic fantasy should give this small-press book a try.
It reminded me somewhat of Peter S. Beagle's work, that blend of matter-of-factness and dreamy fantasy. Neil Gaiman touched on some African folklore in his novel American Gods, and delved deeper in Anansi Boys. If you found those intriguing, pick up Redemption In Indigo for a different spin on gods among us. It is unique and quite enjoyable.
Fascinating characters

I heard this author speak at ConFusion 2015, and have been meaning to get to her books for at least a year. I'm pleased that I finally have. What a pleasure.
Lord is an excellent writer. She draws out fascinating characters and nuances them in ways that make them three dimensional and delightful to read. This particular story is a retelling of a Senegalese folk tale, but does not suffer for not being her own original idea. I'm looking forward to more by her.
