Hidden America submitted by fvitella on June 26, 2018, 10:42am Vlautin is a master of the downtrodden and depicting characters with aspirations greater than their ability to achieve them. In "Lean on Pete," we meet Charley, a teenaged boy with no direction, barely any family, and a heart of gold. Of course, this leads him to make poor decisions, though his intent is always in the right place. Ultimately, this novel is a beautiful tapestry of the contemporary American West and an intimate portrait of poverty.
