Locked in the Pocket submitted by Caser on February 8, 2011, 1:19pm The songwriting team of Dave and Ray Davies is, of course, what's going to hook people on the uber-Brit Village Green record -- who can deny the joyous pop chorus of Picture Book or the earworm extraordinaire, Starstruck -- but for this listener, the caramel in my Milky Way, the piece that makes The Kinks' sound that much sharper than most other British Invasion bands is the drumming of Mick Avory. This guy is so in the pocket that lint has to vacate the premises. His sound is so tight and locked in that it makes those sponge animal capsules look roomy. He's so good that he can make these ridiculous analogies make sense. Listen for the first time or the fortieth, but try one spin just focused on Avory. Dude is ridiculous.
