Engaging and richly imagined re-telling of the fairytale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" submitted by klickitat on August 6, 2012, 6:30pm Gr 6 - 10 How can the twelve princesses of Westfalin possibly be wearing out a pair of dancing slippers a night? Their chamber door is locked and guards are posted outside. Yet every morning without fail there is a pile of ruined slippers in the princesses' bedroom. When the princesses fall ill but continue to dance, we learn that they are under a powerful spell, one that will only be broken when they die. Galen, a humble soldier recently returned from war and now employed in the king's garden, is the only person who can solve the mystery and release the princesses from the curse that binds them. George has written an engaging and richly imagined re-telling of the fairytale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" that will delight young fans of fantasy novels like Shannon Hale's Princess Academy or Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted. Like Hale and Levine, George is notable for featuring a clever and active heroine who plays a large part in securing her happy ending. A sequel, Princess of Glass, a version of "Cinderella", was published in May 2010.
