Mark is a desperate unemployed writer who lives in a world where everyone unfailingly tells the truth. People don't even know what fiction is. Every thought, no matter how humiliating or harsh, tumbles out unvarnished. Then one day, Mark becomes so desperate he concocts a lie. In a world where everyone is unfailingly honest, a lie is believed with total and absolute gullibility. Mark can get anything he wants. The one thing he truly wants is the love of a girl named Anna who happens to be the one person he can't bring himself to lie to.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

comedy submitted by lekendrick on September 11, 2010, 2:05am Gervais is uplifting in his lightness of course prior former boss from the office seems front an center nearly every frame shot! Predictable digs at himself as a, nay, the chubby little fat man are heart warming. Jonah Hill is cast so as make current! Rob Lowe, & seemingly love interest Tina Fey, despite themselves.

thank you submitted by ftan on July 16, 2012, 3:39pm i will pretend that this movie is truthful (get it) and thank mark for inventing lying. without it, the human race would cease to exist and people's feelings would be deeply hurt. this movie was especially funny in the beginning because everyone was telling the truth. and sometimes, the truth hurts.

The invention of lying submitted by Jacy on June 19, 2013, 6:01pm The invention of lying is really funny and actually a bit thought provoking. It is unrealistic but still makes you pause.

Intriguing submitted by crazypockets on July 24, 2013, 6:03pm There is a lot to this movie besides the usual comedy. I thought it was a brilliant look at the things we as a society do to maintain order and to make our lives better. I had never thought that deeply about the subject of lying (other than I can't stand liars), but this really made me think. What is a lie? Is it ever ok to lie? If there were no lies, would we have any stories or religion? Some people think this was Gervais pushing an atheistic agenda, but I thought he was more raising the question of what is it we believe, and why? Very thought-provoking.

Utter nonsense... submitted by Kikumatsu97 on July 27, 2015, 10:31am Do you ever get the feeling that an actor and director and producer get together and say "let's make some money for doing nothing!" that's the whole feeling in this movie. If someone put a lot of work into this one, I feel badly for them. This movie...sucks.

Difficult in some parts submitted by toschag on August 3, 2016, 12:38pm The beginning of the movie is thought provoking and interesting, showing a world where no one lies, which is an interesting concept. Towards the end though it tends more toward a satire of authority and moral law, which I think wasn't a necessary direction to go in.

Different kind of movie submitted by Ele Z. on August 13, 2016, 11:18am Always saying the truth is made so easy

Surprisingly Deep submitted by Meginator on July 20, 2017, 3:54pm I loved this film! The plot relies on a lot of tried-and-true romantic comedy tropes, but the writers and actors take full advantage of the premise (a world wherein people cannot lie) to explore deep philosophical questions about the meaning of truth and fact. The actors have a lot of fun with it and the movie includes many laugh-out-loud moments. This film may not reinvent the wheel, and it certainly doesn't provide concrete answers to the grand questions it poses (which, actually, is probably a good thing), but it's a perfectly serviceable romantic comedy that offers just a bit more beneath the surface.

Funny! submitted by ferielp on August 24, 2017, 12:58pm Very inventive concept.
