Influential Album submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:16pm This is perhaps the quintessential proto-grunge album, with heavy distortion in the guitars and an overall grimy, unpolished sound that feels like it could have emerged from a garage rather than a professional recording studio. But that’s not a bad thing, as the rough edges bring with them a kind of immediacy and honesty even when the band flirts with pop (as with the surprisingly catchy “Gigantic”). The music won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it isn’t deliberately alienating and instead represents a kind of turning point for alternative music where the traditional structures of punk and its many subgenres give way to something more expansive. Other bands would soon take the Pixies’ style and mold it into something more aggressive, but this pensive, occasionally unfocused sound has a power all its own that still resonates today.
