Dang and blast! submitted by unknown on January 29, 2012, 7:33pm Book review by Sefa

“Dang and blast!” said Boggis “We shot too late.” Boggis is one of the meanest farmers around. He has two other friends who are just as mean as he is. They try to kill Mr. Fox because he steals chickens, geese, ducks and cider from the farmers. Mr. Fox steals food so that he can feed his very hungry wife and four children. Mrs. Fox is very weak and can barely move. She has not had food in ten days and is very hungry.

The farmers start digging down into the Foxes hole. What makes the farmers very mad is that the Foxes are also digging but the foxes are digging downward in a diagonal direction! The first time the farmers use shovels, but it takes too long and makes the farmers very tired and hungry. The second time they use tractors. But no matter how hard or quickly they use the equipment, the foxes are much faster. They could not beat the foxes because the tractors were too slow.

In the meantime, Mr. Fox and his friends dig and dig to find food. Then they come to the farmer’s farmhouses. They get a little snack.

What I liked about the book were the unusual ideas Mr. Fox had in his head. The book was also good because the author used strange words. The farmers say, for example, “Dang and blast that billy goat!” I also think the book was written well because the author gave each character lots of detail. The author made the book interesting and made me want to read more! The author Roald Dahl wrote many good books (Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach) and has a good imagination. The author describes the sly Mr. Fox with lots of detail. The book made me sit in bed and read for hours and hours. The book has lots of spirit and humor.

The book is trying to tell you never to give up, not to steal, to be flexible, to face things that are difficult, and to have lots of courage. For example, Mr. Fox steals food even though he knows the farmers might kill him. He has to steal to stay alive. The author is also trying to tell you that there are some people that are not as kind and polite as you are. But you should always ask before you take something from other people. As a farmer, you should not be mean, even if you are upset. One shouldn’t be greedy and one should share with everyone even if they are not your friends.

The Fantastic Mr Fox audiobook submitted by Fevvers - STAR473 on July 10, 2016, 4:54am The downside is not seeing the illustrations that the physical (or digitial) book has, but the upside is Dahl himself reading this audiobook. I recommend it whether you've already read the book or not. Would be great for a long car ride with kids and adults.

Great audiobook submitted by Sara W on July 19, 2019, 8:13pm The story itself is a kid's classic, but the audiobook is a DELIGHT. Engages all ages, full of laughs, and the narrator makes the most of Dahl's outrageous descriptions and keen characters. So much fun.
