Challenging But Rewarding submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:55pm This album showcases intricate, piano-heavy jazz with a fantastic rhythmic sense, ample melodic movement, and displays of virtuoso skill. The music demands attention yet is not overly showy or difficult for the sake of being difficult; the tracks that do utilize some modernist rhythmic and chord structures are still pleasant to listen to. I’m not generally a fan of music that sounds unstructured, but the unusual elements here always feel like they exist for a musical purpose, and the ensemble rounds back into a groove before wandering too far into the wilderness. Generally speaking, the album becomes more experimental as it album goes on, with the later tracks incorporating vocals and electronic elements to varying degrees of success. Altogether, I found this album challenging in surprising and satisfying ways; Robert Glasper has forced me to rethink some of my conceptions of what makes for good music, and I appreciate the challenge.
