good script, good acting, result a really good movie. submitted by Tassos on May 17, 2021, 10:41pm Far better than your average thriller.

Also far better script than Steven King's numerous other books, typically those alleging supernatural events, building up a ton of suspense and then fizzling at the end.

A Taut Psychological Thriller submitted by Meginator on July 1, 2023, 5:24pm This is a taut, claustrophobic psychological thriller with a timeless quality to it and, indeed, horrifying new relevance in the age of ever-present internet fandom. Kathy Bates is absolutely incredible as Annie Wilkes, author Paul Sheldon’s self-proclaimed number-one fan as well as his captor and sometimes torturer. The plot reflects a tight game of manipulation between Wilkes and Sheldon that takes place almost entirely in a single room (along with the complementary story of the small-town sheriff who goes looking for the missing man), and most of its power comes from Wilkes’s terrifying unpredictability and inherent contradictions, with Kathy Bates able to rotate instantly between a number of modes and emotions. For his part, James Caan also masterfully portrays a clever writer who comes up with plot after plot in an effort to escape, only to find himself continually outwitted in increasingly horrifying ways. On balance, the film is more disturbing than shocking, but its (few) moments of explosive violence have an incredibly strong impact because the film relies so heavily on dialogue, character development, and implication to create its tension. With a few moments of refreshing levity sprinkled in, the film keeps the viewer and its characters completely off-balance for the entire ride.
