Tornado -- Homecoming -- Building begins -- Ice storm.
Tornado. Meet the townspeople of Greensburg and hear firsthand accounts of how they survived one of the largest tornadoes in U.S. history. Staring with a clean slate, the town decided to rebuild the entire community as energy efficient and green as possible. Follow the personal stories of the people and the massive rebuilding effort of a Midwest farming town on the decline, as it renews into a sustainable model of eco-living. Homecoming. Four months after a tornado wiped out the town, the 1,400 residents have no homes to return to, only FEMA trailers. The residents try to boost their home town spirit with a homecoming parade and football game. City administrator Steve Hewitt hires an architectural firm to create a blueprint for the sustainable town, a master plan. World-renowned environmentalist John Picard invites some of the high school kids to a Greenbuild Conference in Chicago and opens their eyes to life off the grid. The building begins. The rebuilding of Greensburg is slow going. With little money and scarce materials the town struggles to not only come back but build back greener and stronger. Despite the many obstacles, buildings are going up and City Administrator Steve Hewitt pushes the city council to make a historic decision that could catapult Greensburg into the record books as the greenest city on Earth.
