In Treatment submitted by jaegerla on December 13, 2010, 10:34am How did it take so long for me to watch In Treatment?

Every episode is like a delicately written two or three person play. The action almost all takes place in an office, and-

I'm getting ahead of myself. This is a show about a psychiatrist and his patients. You are along for the ride as the two parties explore each other. Usually the reason behind a person entering therapy is not as obvious as it would seem. The patients each come in after experiencing a trauma, but what they actually gravitate to is some other sector of their life that is causing problems. It's like slowly peeling back the layers of an onion as the therapist discovers in what way this person needs their help. The show demonstrates the back and forth of the patient trying to break down the wall of objectivity that the psychiatrist stands behind, and then also reveals the strenuous effort it takes for the psychiatrist to keep that wall in place. Because without that wall there will be no progress made and the therapy will have failed.

It raises so many questions about what the therapeutic process is really based on. Paul puts it best when explaining the dynamic to his patient Sophie. I can't remember the exact quote so I will paraphrase: "The patient is like the driver and the therapist is in the passenger seat. The therapist has the map, but the patient determines how fast, far, and what direction they will travel in."

Also, I'm not normally into romance storylines, but I really want to see Paul and Laura get together.

Really enjoyed submitted by klickitat on July 7, 2013, 9:48pm There's some really beautiful storytelling going on here. Fantastic performances all around and excellent writing. I find myself wondering and worried about Paul and his patients between episodes. A lot of the material is cringeworthy and painful because the patients are very flawed but that never dampens my enjoyment. I can't stop watching.

It must have really been something to watch this Monday - Friday, every week (how it was originally broadcast).

In Treatment submitted by SBNB on August 8, 2015, 2:30pm It’s not bad, but I was hoping it would be better. I fell asleep during the first episode.
