Different submitted by marshd on June 25, 2011, 4:39pm This album is quite different from the rest of The Decemberists' work. It is based more in a hard rock feel, but with an operatic content. The album is actually more of a cast recording, since it tells a story, much like a musical would. If you are looking for something typical of the band, I would not go for this album. But if you like a harder sound combined with the usual Meloy storytelling, it's a definite must.

A Bold Very Decemberists-y Experiment submitted by timdufresne on July 10, 2018, 4:18pm This album only really works as an album (although The Rake's Song, The Wanting Comes In Waves, and The Queen's Rebuke *could* stand on their own). I saw this performed live and it was stunning and wonderful. Shara Nova (nee Worden), who sings the part of the Queen, is a force of nature and the dive I did into My Brightest Diamond (her band) was a great by product of this album.

I think it's a great album, but I also understand folks for whom it was a bit too much, compared to say Picaresque, which has a lot more great stand alone songs.

Great album submitted by amym on August 19, 2018, 11:12pm I really enjoyed the music on this album. I discovered it from a ghost story badge from the 2017 summer game. There's a real drive to most of the music. I've listened to other Decembrist albums which didn't do much for me - too bland.
