Chaplin-esque Delight submitted by nbauer on September 7, 2009, 8:36am This marvelous movie tells the story of a young guy who wants to be a millionaire, and how he tries to achieve it. Beginning in the 20s, the story follows the Czech protagonist through WWII and beyond. It's one of the most graceful movies I've seen in a long time - it's from Jiri Menzel, who did the classic Closely Watched Trains - and the actor, Ivan Barnev, who plays the young protagonist is clearly influenced by Chaplin in the best way.

Barnev alone would be reason to watch the movie; his performance is as light on its feet and spontaneous as that of any of the great, small-in-stature physical comedians going back to silents. But every actor is beautifully cast, from the older version of the protagonist, to the main love interest (Julia Jensch, in a completely different mode than Sophie Scholl), to the maitre d' from whom the main character learns many of his lessons.

The movie's light, airy overall effect makes the punch that it packs all the more unexpected and powerful. Don't miss it!
