LOVE donuts! submitted by halliejewell on August 27, 2018, 9:02pm my daughters love donuts and love this book!
peculiar pastries submitted by FordAlpha on August 26, 2019, 10:10pm This book has a retro vibe in both text and illustrations. I'm not a big fan of Bob Staake's style, with its highly stylized, geometric shapes, but the illustrations are certainly colorful and eye-catching. The rhyming text is a cautionary tale of taking competition too far and losing sight of essential quality. The crazy donuts that the bakers invent get really over the top until a little girl requests a plain glazed, returning our donut chef to his senses. Some of the donut descriptions won't make sense to kids and seem to have been written just to make a rhyme (um, donuts dressed up like a Shriner?). And there are some glaring inconsistencies in the story. It's good for a few story times, but not going to become a classic or even a family favorite.
