This is a fantastic book! I read it in one weekend, couldn't put it down. Having Icelandic heritage, and a grandmother who grew up in Gimli, and I even have an Auntie Byrdye myself... I dove into this book like I was attending a family reunion and didn't want to come home. I can't say how it's viewed by those not obsessed with Iceland and its culture, but I've read other reviews that say it will still be liked anyway.
http://www.christinasunley.com/ Has the scoop!! And the first chapter to preview as well.
The story is told from the POV of Freya who grew up in Connecticut, but spent summers in Gimli, Manitoba visiting her Grandmother and the vivacious Aunt Birdie. As an adult Freya learns of a very well kept family secret and Freya is determined to solve the mystery. A mystery that takes her to Iceland and back again.
The story deals with mental illness on many levels, family issues, Icelandic heritage, self affirmation, and so on. A really swell read.
In 2009 the author spoke about her debut book at the annual Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. http://www.icelandicfestival.com/ Hurrah!
