american tail submitted by honordenver on June 20, 2012, 10:21pm i liked this movie

Immigration and loss of family from a child mouse's POV submitted by willow on August 21, 2015, 6:59am Fievel is one of my favorite animated characters, and I love the song "Somewhere Out There," a musical number, although the rest of the movie has only a few other songs. It's an interesting take on immigration.

A warning, though, that there are several scary scenes for young children: Fievel going overboard in a storm, being without his family, other abandoned and orphaned mice children, and criminal and violent cats in several scenes.

Classic story submitted by vulke99 on July 9, 2018, 7:56pm Great story that is now a classic. I loved this when it first came out and it is still good.

Great submitted by anacoluthon on July 17, 2019, 10:59am A wonderful way to tell explain to children the hopes, fears, and hardships that immigrants face.

coming to America submitted by FordAlpha on August 13, 2019, 10:44pm It might be timely to rewatch "An American Tail" now. Though its heroes are mice, this animated film reminds us of the humanity of immigrants and the struggle and sacrifice that so many have faced to come to the United States. The places of origin, modes of travel, and points of entry may have changed, but the hope and terror remain--as does family love. Plucky Fievel, the mouse child, is separated from his immigrant family; he and other vulnerable children are preyed upon by unscrupulous and exploitative criminals; enormous determination and luck are required to reunite him with his loving family. There's some really scary stuff here. Really scary and all too real.

Children missing a parent may find this tough or good to start conversation submitted by ccrose on August 29, 2019, 3:06pm Ditto on the scary moments.
My daughter, a single parent kiddo, remembered the song Somewhere Out There for years. It frequently brought a talk about exactly where was her dad.

ITS SAD submitted by downing on August 6, 2022, 4:13pm BUT IT'S APART OF MY CHILDHOOD
