Pump it Up submitted by Caser on June 21, 2011, 5:00pm After all these years it's still hard to believe that This Year's Model is Costello's second album (no sophomore slump here) and his first with his best lineup, the Attractions. The previous album, My Aim is True, might have put his name in ink with "Allison", "Watching the Detectives", and "Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes", but after a few spins, that one starts sounding like a tribute to his favorite genres, from Presley rockabilly to Clash stompers.

This Year's Model is a confident statement from an artist completely comfortable in his own idiosyncratic skin. It's a frenetic record, packed with innuendo and double entendre, often linking relationship dynamics to unspoken malice and the attraction/repulsion to power trips. This Year's Girl and Lipstick Vogue are particularly caustic in their implication, though they also scan more straightforwardly as songs about modeling.

The Attractions are led by Steve Nieve on keys, who is as important to the EC sound as any of the more noted guitar/singer combos in rock history -- Plant/Page, Edge/Bono, or Keith/Mick to name a few. He's way up in the mix here, as bombastic and in your face as Costello's sneer, with a love me or hate me, I don't really care attitude to his playing. No doubt, the production and lyrics here are what link this group to the punk movement, though the arrangements and songwriting are perhaps more complex than what most punk bands were doing in the late '70s. And to think the songs get even better on his next record, Armed Forces.
