Daniel Day-Lewis, Kevin J. O'Connor, Ciarán Hinds, Dillon Freasier, Barry Del Sherman, Paul F. Tompkins.
A down-and-out silver miner raising a son, self-made oilman Daniel Plainview, whose voracious appetite for oil turns him into a California tycoon in the early years of the 20th century. Getting the oil from the ground is an intensely physical process that later broadens into Plainview's equally indomitable urge to control land and power. Along the way, Plainview deals with a mighty derrick fire, a visit from a long-lost brother, and the ongoing involvement of Plainview's poker-faced adoptive son. Plainview's rivalry with Eli Sunday, the local preacher.
DVD, region 1, widescreen (2.35:1) presentation; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

blood submitted by hcf on August 2, 2014, 4:48pm PT Anderson made a deeply disturbing movie

Any redeeming qualities? submitted by ccrose on August 29, 2019, 1:50pm Plainview is a relentless character. One of those people you keep keenly watching for any redeeming qualities.
The audience watches as every interaction is tainted by his assumed entitlement to everything.
The visual scope: Texas land, empty and primed for greed , derricks and men like ants drenched in oil.
Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead wrote score, symphonic foreboding, like an evil passage in a fairytale.
It’s Plainview who we hold out hope for insight, needing others or some sign of attachment to the boy he raised and called his son. But it doesn’t happen.
What a story. What guts to create a character the audience hopes for but gets, no sign of conscience. In fact, he’s drained. He brutally beats his shadow, the fake preacher. “I’m done now.” Is his last line.
Wow, that’s drama.

I Drink Your Milkshake submitted by sumsaylor on July 17, 2022, 1:02pm A standout performance by Daniel Day Lewis in this stellar movie by PT Anderson. Many twists and turns in this story of a self-made oil tycoon and his relationship as he raises his son. Stunning in its direction and imagery, a real pleasure to watch

I think I have seen some of it or all of it before. watching it again on DVD now. submitted by Tassos on March 31, 2023, 6:02pm Lengthy introduction but after that, the movie flows at a good pace.
