It makes you realise that every person of color you meet comes from a long line of ancestors that were slaves in this country. You understand that they weren't savages, but proud and intelligent people. You understand the society they had to live in and the mental anguish of their daily lives. How over generations, their names, their language, their beliefs, their habits, their wisdom was removed. The story follows the personal lives of the generations from an African captured from Gambia. How they were enslaved, sold, tortured, raped etc. and how they stood up against these adversities. But these personal stories are also shown parallel to the larger historical events that were going on in the world and the country, and how they affected them as well.

This book is highly recommended and will leave you becoming a more empathetic human being, something that can be said of only a handful of books.
