Originally released as a motion picture in 2007.
Special features: Deleted scenes; Cast and crew commentary; Behind-the-scenes, the life of Jane Austen; The book club: deconstructed; Los Angeles premiere.

A group of six friends, in Sacramento, gather to distract themselves from loss - a newly dumped Sylvia, Prudie's repressed disappointment, or Jocelyn, who has a life of unrealized dreams. All are devoted Jane Austen fans, except the lone man, Grigg, who has an ulterior motive for joining the chick-lit gang. There's plenty of pride (Prudie), prejudice (Jocelyn), sense (Sylvia), and sensibility (Sylvia's daughter Allegra). Throw in a fair amount of persuasion. Relationships and alliances unfolds over the months.
DVD, region 1, anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) presentation; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

dumb submitted by nwall24 on July 7, 2013, 10:16pm I think this is a pretty dumb movie. I'm not a huge Jane Austen fan though, so maybe that is why I feel this way. I wouldn't watch it again.

jane austen book club submitted by hcf on August 2, 2014, 4:20pm i love jane austen and wanted to love this movie but it was pretty lame

cute submitted by majean on July 21, 2018, 2:53pm It's a fluffy flick about people who like reading Jane Austen. Don't read too much into it.

Too Little Time to Develop Its Characters Properly submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2020, 9:22pm This film has a great premise and the excellent cast to pull it off, but it is ultimately hampered by its time constraints. Each of the main characters has their own emotional arc, but the film weighs a few of them more heavily than others, making an ensemble piece feel somewhat lopsided and unsatisfying. Likewise, two supporting characters have rushed redemption arcs that resolve happily for no apparent reason other than that the film was nearing its runtime limit and needed to resolve each story in a certain way. I loved the updated take on Jane Austen’s leading ladies, and the way that the story and characters alike discuss (and even disagree about) Austen’s intentions, impact, and influence, and the film left me wanting to read (or revisit) Austen’s work. Unfortunately, despite grand ambitions and the talent in place to fulfill them, the production is too rushed to make much of an emotional impact; it’s lighthearted and it’s fun, but it doesn’t deliver on its full potential.

great cast, plot flop submitted by smgop on July 17, 2021, 9:35am Great cast assembled for a mediocre plot. Oh well.
