When I was a child... submitted by jibkidder on June 22, 2022, 9:03am ...my first 10 tapes were U2 tapes. Not for any good reason, my dad just bought me October one day because his best friend liked it, and then I started to slowly accumulate the rest. Because the accumulation was slow, so different than my son, who is growing up in a world with a media abundance I could not have imagined back then, I would read every word of the liner sheet over and over and try to make some extra sense of everything. I kept thinking, who is this Brian Eno, because just instantly, this record sounds different. It would be years before I would learn about Ambient music, Eno's major contribution, although it was really just the injection of a pop element into the existing, in fact ancient, practice of Minimalism, and decades before Eno would find himself in England somewhere listening to the music I made, music more influenced by this particular record than a million records I like more, because music influences you more when you are young. The most crazy illustration of that point is the millions of people who never listen to new music after turning 16, their taste is frozen. The real flaw in U2, which might also be a reason for their success, is Bono's awful, horrible, just ghastly lyrics. He is the Hallmark Card of lyricists, just the tritest thing possible. Consequently, a song like "Elvis Presley in America" is as good as U2 get, since his lyrics are completely buried in effects and I have no idea what he's talking about. This is such a colorful record, I can't wait til technology advances to the point that we can completely erase vocals from music and then I can go back and listen to instrumental versions of the 1980s U2 albums. The Edge is an absolutely singular guitarist, I wish he'd failed more in life, had become less famous and, as a result, devoted more of his energies to experimental music. That is a funny truth about "potential".

uneven album submitted by tisaallen on July 16, 2022, 8:53pm U2's first album with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois has some excellent soundscapes as well as high points and low points in songwriting along with U2's typical mix of the exciting (the Edge's guitar playing) and the mundane (Bono's terrible lyrics).
