In the late nineteenth century, when Conor Broekhart discovers a conspiracy to overthrow the king, he is branded a traitor, imprisoned, and forced to mine for diamonds under brutal conditions while he plans a daring escape from Little Saltee prison by way of a flying machine that he must design, build, and, hardest of all, trust to carry him to safety.

Airman is a great book, if a bit tragic. In this book Eoin Colfer stuns us yet again with his unorthadox (but great) style of writing stories. The main character, Conor, was born in the sky, (no, he is not an angel) ,more precisely a death trap of a hot air ballon. After the discribing of this he goes on to save his best friend and princess of his islands (the Saltees) by using a flag as a parachute and is made a "sir" by the king. Unfortunately his king, and mentor are killed by an evil marshal in an attempt to take over his government and he is sent to little Saltee, a prison island, and made to work.
This book packs suspense, a good adventure and a half history into a beautifully illustrated cover.
Steampunk Colfer submitted by marshd on June 17, 2011, 12:01pm The most enchanting non-fantasy book I've ever read. This book is full of adventure, humor, and steampunk fun. I loved the plot, the characters, and even the ending, which is not necessarily what you would expect.
Airman submitted by foxridgect on July 9, 2011, 10:41am I love this book!! Airman is full of adventure and there is a lot of tension at times. I love everything about it, and look forward to reading other books by Eoin Colfer.

Eoin Colfer brings fun with a different universe from his much-loved Artemis Fowl series. I highly recommend this book as well. Readers will find parts of it very disturbing, as it is about injustice, imprisonment and torture. (SPOILER ALERT) However, it has a happy ending, so hang in there through the scary parts.
Those who love steampunk will love this book. As yet, it has no prequel or sequel to my knowledge, although I wish Colfer would write one.
Written for teens, the book will also compell adult readers.
