a weighty subject submitted by FordAlpha on August 17, 2019, 9:59pm This is a heavy, scholarly read. Though the author is a skillful historian and writer, she doesn't package the history in a slick, easily digestible narrative. It took me a while to get through this book, but I'm glad I did. It deepened my understanding of the Civil War and its effects on Americans. It shows how the sheer scale of mortality and suffering fundamentally reshaped people's experience of death and funerary practices. While the statistics stagger one's mind, the quotations from diaries and letters let the actual voices of soldiers, their family members, and widows shine.
