Teenage Rockhopper penguin Cody Maverick is an up-and-coming surfer who is about to enter his first pro competition. Followed by a documentary crew to film his experiences, Cody leaves Antarctica for the warmer climes in order to surf in the Big Z Memorial Surf Championship covered by the SPEN network. His hero, champion surfer Big Z, has been gone for ten years, and Cody wants to win the championship in his memory. On his journey he encounters surfer-dude Chicken Joe who is also on his way to the surf-off. The two arrive to discover that the reigning champ, Tank Evans is currently looking to win this Memorial again.

Cute! submitted by SarahRose on March 15, 2010, 6:20pm Makes me long for summer and want to learn how to surf. The characters endear themselves to the viewer quickly and it's a great story about friendship and sportsmanship. Funny for kids and grown ups as well.

Clever mockumentary with great music submitted by FordAlpha on August 4, 2023, 9:39pm This somewhat under-the-radar film was overshadowed by the "Happy Feet" juggernaut, but it's a much, much better film. "Surf's Up" is a witty mockumentary (thus the shaky "handheld camera" effect in some scenes) with a perfect voice cast, great soundtrack, quotable lines, fun easter eggs like voice cameos by famous surfers, and a well-written character arc. This is a cartoon that I'm happy to watch again and again.
