Great Book for Emergent Readers submitted by alisondenomme on July 1, 2011, 11:36am My son is just learning to read and it is really difficult to find books that are at his reading level that he also finds fun and interesting. This book and the other Mo Willems Elephant and Piggie books are fabulous. They are funny, the illustrations are simple and easy to follow, and there is repetion of key words- all the elements of a great emergent reader book! We will be getting more of these.

Split submitted by ldupuis44 on July 5, 2011, 9:36pm While I agree with others that this would be a great book for emergent readers, I borrowed it as a book to READ TO my son. It is a wonderful book for those learning to read, not so much as a book to read to young children.

Infering submitted by kathscot on August 14, 2012, 8:41pm Our 1st grade teacher uses this book to teach how clues in the pictures can help a reader infer what the author hasn't explicitly told you. Also great for getting clues about emotions.

Fun to read together! submitted by avalade on July 15, 2013, 7:45pm this was a lot of fun for my daughter and I to enjoy together. The text isn't challenging but there are plenty of opportunities to teach how to read with expression. Lots of laughs! Highly recommend this series!

We have been reading these books since she was 2.5 years old and now at almost 3.5 she is learning to read these by herself. simple, funny, and full of emotions. Elephant and piggie are best friends and these books illustrate quite beautifully the relationship of friendship through children' eyes.

Wonderful! submitted by LibraryMaven on June 15, 2014, 11:42am Learning to read is hard work, but main characters Elephant and Piggie make it far more interesting than most early readers do. Written in dialogue bubbles, the book follows elephant Gerald and his friend Piggie as one bird and then a pair of birds nest on his head. Gerald is unable to see what is happening, and illustrations and dialogue make the book inexplicably funny, even after re-readings. The vocabulary and sentence structure is kept simple, but punctuation and the aforementioned speech bubbles keep it from feeling repetitive. Simple but expressive illustrations give readers clues to the meaning of the words and the emotions that go with them. And at fifty-seven pages hardcover, There is a Bird on Your Head feels more like a ‘real’ book than many early readers do. While it is designed for children learning to read, it could also be used as a great practice for punctuation and reading aloud, due to Willems’ use of exclamation marks and question marks. A good addition to school, public, and private libraries. This is a well-designed early reader that I predict will be around for a while.

The language is simple for early readers. And the message is a great reminder to everyone, if you have a problem, you can ask for change.
