Enlightening! submitted by shumoon on August 3, 2014, 9:22am By reading this graphic novel, I really got a sense for why "Bleeding Kansas" was such a contentious chapter in American history. "The Kents" really illustrates how tense the political situation was in the Great Plains in the prelude to the Civil War, in a way that history books were unable to do for me. I learned how it was a time when words and beliefs were matched by actions, and that no person of African descent was truly free until slavery was abolished everywhere in the United States.
